THE STORY UNTIL NOW

Freshmen #1 - July 2005

Read issue #1 free at DrunkDuck.com!

This issue is narrated by Annalee Rogers, who arrives at Freese College in upstate New York to find out that she has been housed, along with a group of 14 other freshmen, in the Boughl Science Building due to overflow. Annalee's dorm mates include Paula Pophouse, the overweight, boy-crazy red head; Renee, the trashy Jersey girl who alternates between screwing and fighting with her delinquent boyfriend, Brady; and "Cacophony," the punk girl who constantly stares.

Annalee also finds that there are two rooms of boys. The first is home to "Norrin" Weismeyer, the comic book nut who immediately develops a crush on her, along with Greenpeace activist Charles Levy, math whiz Elwood Johns, overweigh, out of water Amish kid Liam Adams, and womanizing French exchange student Jacques Lalleaux.

Annalee attends her psychology classes and finds herself smitten by a frat guy from Alpha Chi Rho whose name is Rob, who invites her to a party. She returns home and can't concentrate for her test because she's thinking about this boy. Lovestruck Paula encourages Annalee to go to the party, and so Annalee convinces everyone to come with her.

The frat guys are excited when they see the freshmen arrive, and send their pledges out for a secret mission. At the party, Paula tries to talk to Jacques, who dismisses her rudely. Norrin tries to work up the liquid courage to ask Annalee out, but he bellyflops. Annalee is absolutely taken by Rob, but she feels betrayed when the frat guys humiliate Ray, a freshman from the second boys' room, by pulling his pants down and stringing up from a balcony.

The freshmen return to their dorm to find that the frat pledges ransacked the place-- they spray painted the walls, emptied the closets, built a massive ice cream sundae on the floor and even left the school mascot, a beaver, in the girls' closet. Miserable and depressed, the kids are mostly wallowing in their misfortune when an energy explosion knocks them all unconscious... all except Norrin, who went out for pizza and missed it.

The next morning, the kids awaken with mysterious powers: Charles can hear his wheat grass begging for mercy. Elwood makes Liam drunk with a burp. And Ray's "member" has grown to an enormous length. Annalee is able to jump into Paula's mind when she concentrates on understanding her, and the whole situation is summarized by the Beaver, who speaks with a snooty English accent.

Freshmen #2 - August 2005

Narrated by Kenneth "Norrin" Weismeyer, this issue picks up right where the story left out, as the kids explore their super powers. Paula realizes that she can make anyone fall in love with her (and quickly uses her powers on dreamy Jacques), and Brady struggles with his telekenesis, which he can only use when in physical contact with Renee.

The kids explore the dorm to try and undrestand what happened when they were knocked out. They find that a large section of the wall of the second boys' dorm room was destroyed. They also find an unconscious Dr. Tomlinson in the basement with a burned-out machine. Dr. Tomlinson explains that this is the Ax-Cell-Erator, and it was designed to teach living cells to adapt and overcome. The kids realize that their powers are based on whatever they were thinking at that fateful moment. Dr. Tomlinson requires their help to rebuild his machine and cure them and heal all of the illnesses in the world.

Norrin, thunderstruck that he didn't get a super power, builds his own costume and tries to take team leadership, but the kids simply laugh at him as they set about their first mission, to infiltrate a crosstown rival school during a big football game. The kids break into the other school's science department and steal a power supply while experimenting with their powers. To cause a distraction, Elwood uses a toxic burp to make the entire stadium drunk.

The mission is a success, but those Alpha Chi Rho frat guys are in the audience, watching the kids from behind sunglasses, and they're the only ones not affected by Elwood's powers.

Freshmen #3 - September 2005

It's six weeks later, and the kids have been practicing with their powers. Liam narrates this issue as a letter to his mum, and it's clear that he sees the kids in a whole new light. Perplexed by their complexity and seeming contradictions, Liam struggles to fit in and make friends while staying true to his values.

Annalee speaks with her father, who we realize was an investor in the Ax-Cell-Erator machine. He recently left Annalee's mother for his secretary, and there's a lot of tension between in the family.

The kids undertake a mission to an ion exciter, the last component needed to rebuild the Ax-Cell-Erator, but when they arrive, they realize they'd have to unplug --thus killing-- a number of comatose cancer patients from the machine in order to take it. When the kids balk, the frat guys show up with hulking muscles and glowing eyes, and they're immune to the kids' powers. In the melee, Paula is smashed into a wall when Liam's crisis of conscience keeps him from using his earthquaking ability to attack the frat guys.

Freshmen #4 - November 2005

This issue tells two concurrent and intersecting storylines. The kids deal with Paula's injury, which has left her in a coma and hanging on the edge of death, while Brady, Elwood and the Beaver get stoned to experiment with Elwood's power (and avoid the tragedy they're facing).

Annalee wants to jump into Paula's mind, but Norrin forbids it, unsure how dangerous this could be. As Annalee goes on a rampage, arguing with anyone who will listen, a stoned Elwood stumbles through the Boughl Science building and finds the frat guys getting their power from Dr. Tomlinson, who charges them up with just a touch.

Norrin and some of others investigate the frat house, which has been torn apart. Charles finds a plant, which tells him that the frat guys became drunk with their power and attacked each other. Some of them even died.

Headstrong Annalee finally jumps into Paula's mind, leaving the others fearful for her life, and a heartbroken Norrin is captured by the frat guys.

Freshmen #5 - December 2005

Annalee confronts Paula in her mind, jumping through her memories and realizing how difficult it was for her to grow up as an overweight, unattractive child. She searches for something that's poisoning Paula's emotions, keeping her from waking up, but Paula doesn't want Annalee to delve further. But Annalee pushes on, until she finds the memory that's killings Paula: She used her powers to make Jacques fall in love with her, then lost her virginity with him.

Norrin, meanwhile, has been beaten and tortured by the frat guys. When Dr. Tomlinson arrives, Norrin is weak and tired, but uses his gauntlet communicator to call his teammates and let them hear Dr. Tomlinson, who posits that the only way to make the world understand the power of his machine is to make them need it. He wants to put a cancer-causing agent in the water supply and then use the Ax-Cell-Erator's power to cure everyone.

Norrin, understanding that with great power comes great responsibility, hangs up on his teammates, who are determined to stop Dr. Tomlinson, whether they're fighting with or against Norrin.

Freshmen #6 - January 2006

The Freshmen confront the frat guys and Dr. Tomlinson, along with Norrin, who has been infused with Tomlinson's power-giving touch, at the Milano/Huffman Dam, where the doctor plans to poison the water supply. Annalee is forced from Paula's mind and joins the battle, convincing Norrin that he's making a mistake.

The kids have an epic battle with the frat guys that is both brutal and hysterical, and Norrin comes to the realization that turning on his teammates was a mistake. Brady and Renee share a tender respite in their bickering, Liam uses his powers to defeat evil in the name of God and the forces of good prevail. Dr. Tomlinson and the frat guys are lost when the dam crumbles under Liam's power.

Jacques returns to Paula's bedside. Although he's hurt and angry, the time he spent with Paula was special to him, and he wants her to reawaken. Finally, she does, and they're reunited.

In the back-up story bridging the gap between the first and second series, the Beaver accompanies Norrin home as he recovers from his ordeal with Dr. Tomlinson. But excitable Norrin is swept up in a new adventure as he investigates his sister's sinister-seeming new boyfriend. After the Beaver's intervention saves Norrin from an embarrassing disaster, Norrin re-dedicates himself to superherodom, adopting an official new code-name, the Scarlet Knight. But Norrin is having dreams of a new vision of evil in the guise of Mr. Fiddlesticks, a character from a series of children's books. Is this another flight of fancy, or is Mr. Fiddlesticks a vision of the future...?
