Design Brady's "Renee" Tattoo |
The challenge: Your challenge is to design the tattoo that Brady has on his chest. The only caveat is that it has to have the name "RENEE," and my recommendation is to make the letters clear and prevalent, because they'll have to be drawn on him even when he's not big in the panel. This is Freshmen, after all, with 14 characters and a ton of dialogue, so keep simplicity, or, at least, clarity in mind.
The reward: Freshmen Volume 1 Trade Paperback, signed by Hugh Sterbakov and Seth Green.
The winner: In the end, it came down to a near-draw between Windygirl and Mamacita. Both excellent entries. But logic won out for me that Brady probably wouldn't have felt like she was a ball and chain at the time when he got the tat, so Mamacita is the winner! The winning image:

Issue #6 Contest: Ended 3/15/06 The 15th Freshman |
The challenge: Cast yourself into the Boughl Science Building at the moment the Ax-Cell-Erator exploded and create your character and superpowers.
The reward: Freshmen #6, signed by Hugh Sterbakov and Seth Green.
The winner: "Marv" of Anniston, AL won with "The Informant," an entry so strong it made Hugh wish he'd thought of it himself!
- I was out of my element and I knew it. Every day I questioned my decision to attend Freese College. Most of my friends had stayed behind, choosing to attend the local community college, or getting jobs in town. I had always had the desire to leave my small hometown, but I was beginning to doubt that I had the skills necessary to succeed in the "real world".
I was struggling in all my classes, but Intro to Physics was the worst. I hadn't realized how much math would be involved, and my relationship with math had always been rocky at best.
As frustrated and overwhelmed as I was, I was also determined not to flunk out, and I had decided to spend the night before the Physics exam cramming as much as I could. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anywhere suitable to study. The library had closed, and I didn't want to stay in my room (my roommate and I had never really hit it off). Finally, I decided to head to the Physics lab in the Boughl Science Building. The lab was always open to students, and would surely be quiet and deserted this time of night.
So I settled in at one of the tables, and started reading Chapter 3, determined to absorb every word, and remember it thoroughly. That didn't last l ong. As minutes became hours, I felt a panic set in. I began to realize that I was never going to get all this information in time. It was just too much, too hard, and too complicated.
The last thing I remember thinking that night was I wish I could understand stuff better, without having to study for hours like this.
I woke up the next morning feeling disoriented and dizzy. The room was a mess. It looked like an atomic bomb had gone off. No, obviously not an atomic bomb. The force required to cause the debris patterns in the lab would have come from a much smaller disturbance. Perhaps a chemical explosion? There was no discernable odor, but I should probably check for gas leaks...
Wait a second. Where did all that jargon come from? I was certain I didn't know anything about explosives yesterday, much less atomic bombs. Maybe the studying last night had sunk in after all. I started gathering up my books, still concerned about my sudden increase in knowledge, or at least in studying ability.
I bent down to pick up my Physics Book. OW! It was hot to the touch, but it hadn't burnt up. Using my sneaker, I flipped it over to see the front cover, and I was startled by what I saw. The cover of the book was s till perfect, except for the charcoal outline of a right hand in the center. I placed my right hand over the outline, and it was a perfect match. What did this mean? Did I somehow burn the book? How did that relate to my new familiarity with its' contents?
Over the course of the next week, I learned more about myself and the others who had been in the Science Building at the time. Turns out there had been an explosion with some experimental equipment, and it had somehow altered everyone around. All in all, 15 of us had gained abilities, powers, or above-average genetalia.
My gift is simple. If I come in contact with any source of information, I can "absorb" and understand it completely. I've mostly tried with books so far, but I did get Annalee's phone number from her cell phone the other day. (Serves her right for taking over my body without my permission. She claims she was just "experimenting", but I don't believer her). The other day, I tried to bite off more than I could chew. I grabbed onto my computer while I was logged onto the Internet, and I passed out for two days. So I'm going to take it slow for now.
Norrin is trying to get everybody to use their abilities like superheroes. He keeps calling me "Oracle" for some reason, but I prefer The Informant. It sounds more mysterious.

Issue #5 Contest: Ended 2/14/06 Freshmen Theme Song |
The challenge: This contest was inspired by "Weird Al" Yankovic's style of satirizing popular songs by changing their lyrics. Participants created a Freshmen theme song in the same vein.
The reward: Freshmen #5, signed by Hugh Sterbakov, Seth Green and Mila Kunis.
The winner: "Admin" of Philadelphia, PA won his second contest in a row with "Freshmen Comic" to the tune of "Ice Ice Baby."

Issue #4 Contest: Ended 1/3/06 Artwork Contest |
|
The challenge: Create the most interesting Freshmen-themed artwork, using any means available. The reward: As seen on the right, Rodolfo Migliari's original artwork from his Green Thumb entry in the Freshmen Yearbook! A fantastic piece! Thanks again to Rodolfo for offering it up! The winner: "Marv" placed strongly with his clay creation of Wannabe, and "R.M. Peavy" certainly turned heads with her... interesting... declaration of love for the Beaver. In the end, "Admin" won the day by altering the dialogue of a Freshmen scene to introduce a new subplot... where The Beaver regrets not having been cast in The Karate Kid. You read that right. It also features a guest appearance by Corey Haim. Read on... |
